Africa celebrates the birth of Jesus
Karl-Dietrich Opitz
Nails in the manger, the Christ child with a crown
of thorns? But that just does not fit together. But it is not just the Christ child, the child in the manger that
Christians in Africa celebrate at Christmas. They celebrate the all-inclusive love of God: from the manger to the
cross.

mainline churches in man African countries, but less so on the "smaller" missions and the churches that they founded.

REFORMED SOTERIOLOGY AND THE MALAWIAN CONTEXT
Handwell Yotamu Hara
This Theses surveys the reformed view
of the doctrine of salvation as proposed by John Calvin, Karl Barth and G.C.
Berkouwer and applies it to the Malawian context. Dr Hara argues that
although salvation in African contexts is generally limited to physical
life, soul salvation that involves the whole human being from a reformed
perspective is a possibility for Malawians.

with its famous missionary, Bruno Gutmann, of whom people still say
today that he spoke Chagga language better than any of them.

CHRISTIANITY AND AFRICAN
TRADITIONAL RELIGION TWO REALITIES OF A DIFFERENT KIND
Bregje de Kok
The large majority of Malawians are Christians, and
still it is not uncommon that even committed Christians resort to
practices of African Traditional Religion (ATR) in situations of crisis. Bregje de Kok argues that this is not syncretism, but that both
Christianity and ATR are realities in the lives of people, but on
different levels.

THE USE OF FULFILMENT QUOTATIONS
IN THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
Jonathan
Nkhoma
The uniqueness of fulfilment quotations in the Gospel of Matthew has for a long
time attracted scholarly attention. Earlier works mainly focused on the
literary features of this phenomenon. The present study investigates these
special quotations, in light of their old and New Testament contexts, to see how
they contribute to an understanding of the evangelist’s theology. In the process
the problem of their origin and character is addressed. The results attained are
then related to wider issues in Matthean scholarship and the synoptic Problem in
general. The study establishes that the evangelist is responsible for the
formulation of these quotations and that he uses them theologically to explain
the person and mission of Jesus as the Messiah according to the Scriptures.

tremendously and is still very much off the international road. There, Monica Vovo and her fellow women still dance their dreams.

THEOLOGY
COOKED IN AN AFRICAN POT
Klaus Fiedler, Paul Gundani, Hilary Mijoga

Such cooking compares well to what happened in Medieval Europe and
relates to similar processes in India.

CHRISTIANITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Fulata Moyo and Martin Ott (eds.)
Malawi is a country of great natural beauty: wooded
mountains, fertile plains, lakes full of fish, and a diverse wildlife.
Over many years, however, mismanagement and a lack of respect for the
environment have detracted from its beauty and depleted its natural
resources. Deforestation, soil erosion, poaching, and over fishing
detrimentally affect the lives and livelihoods of many Malawians on a
daily basis. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Chilwa Wetland
area.
