In the process the problem of their origin and character is addressed. The results attained are then related to wider issues in Matthean scholarship and the synoptic Problem in general. The study establishes that the evangelist is responsible for the formulation of these quotations and that he uses them theologically to explain the person and mission of Jesus as the Messiah according to the Scriptures.
